3 décembre 2012, 14h00 The role of ion channels in short- and long-term functional plasticity

Long-lasting plasticity of synaptic transmission is classically thought to be the cellular substrate for information storage in the brain. Recent data indicate however that it is not the whole story and persistent changes in the intrinsic neuronal excitability have been shown to occur in parallel to the induction of long-term synaptic modifications. This form of plasticity depends on the regulation of voltage-gated ion channels. We will discuss data showing how synaptic activation of glutamate receptors initiates long-lasting modification in neuronal excitability in both pyramidal cells and GABAergic interneurons. In the second part of my talk I will discuss the mechanisms and possible functional implications of analog-digital enhancement of synaptic strength, a novel form of short-term plasticity involving voltage-gated K+ and Na+ channels.
