Shaping perception with experience : Insights from brain and behaviour

Understanding how action perception, an observer’s prior experience with an action, and an observer’s affective response to an action interact is essential for advancing knowledge about how we interact with others in a social world. To date, however, these three domains have not yet been studied together. The studies I will be presenting, use complementary behavioural and brain-based approaches, including complex motor skill training, functional neuroimaging (fMRI) and physiological measures (facial electromyography – EMG) to construct a more complete understanding of the impact of experience on action perception and affect. Overall, the results suggest that experience with a particular movement affects explicit and implicit affective judgments of that movement, as well as significantly modifies brain circuits engaged during action perception.
